Trump says US Government should ‘Take Over’ Washington, D.C
Donald Trump suggested that the federal government should “take over Washington, DC”, as he pointed to crime, graffiti & an abundance of tents on the lawn.
Since Trump’s first term, he has faced a contentious relationship with Muriel Bowser, the Democratic mayor of the nation’s capital.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One Wednesday night, he said, “I think we should govern the District of Columbia. We should run it with an iron fist, with law and order, and make it absolutely flawless.”
“The federal government should take control of DC and run it properly.”
Trump said he likes the mayor and has a very good relationship with him. “But they are failing at their job – crime has increased, there is more graffiti, and the number of tents on the lawns has also increased significantly.”
The Republican leader says his goal is to make the city safer, because people are “dying” and “getting injured.”
He expressed concern over the issue of homelessness, saying, “It’s very sad, people are homeless everywhere. We should be helping the homeless, but we can’t do that in Washington, DC.”
Trump expressed concern over the condition of the city over the reception of foreign leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“You cannot let this happen, this cannot be accepted and you cannot put tents on your beautiful plazas and lawns.”
In early February, two Republican lawmakers introduced a bill aimed at repealing the city’s Home Rule Act, which would strip the mayor and city council of their authority.
“Corruption, crime and incompetence in DC government have embarrassed our nation’s capital for decades,” said Senator Mike Lee. He also said that Congress should restore “respect and integrity” in the city.
Bowser did not respond directly to the president, but on X Post he called Washington “a world-class city,” adding that it’s the only place in the US where you can see pandas for free.
