Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
Health authorites are on high alert as in last week China faced a outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in northern regions.
Hospitals in China are struggling with large numbers of young patients with symptioms, Symptoms Cough, Fever, Nasal congestion, and Shortness of breath.
It looked similar to early Covid-19 cases.
Now, the virus has cases have been reported in UK, cases are increasing. The UK Health and Security Agency has confirmed a rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections.
How it spreads ?
- HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing
- It can also spread through close contact, like touching or shaking hands
- You can catch HMPV by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
Is HMPV deadly ?
It does not cause death and often resolves on its own.
Few case studies have shown that the fatality rates range between 25-30%

Initially identified in 2001, HMPV is an old virus, a new mutation could have led to the recent spike in infections. As HMPV does not have definitive treatment, only supportive care like most viruses is recommended
Patient 4. A 75-year-old woman who had longstanding COPD was admitted with a chest infection. She had prior autoimmune neutropenia, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and pulmonary valvular stenosis. Her respiratory failure worsened within 24 h of hospital admission. hMPV was detected in the tracheal aspirate sample.
